Privacy Policy

In short: Wortfreund has no accounts and no servers of its own. Your words, pictures and progress stay on your phone. We do not collect, sell or share personal data, and the app contains no ads, analytics or tracking.

Data stored on your device

Your word groups, words, pictures you add, learning progress and settings are stored only in the app's private storage on your device. Uninstalling the app or clearing its data deletes them.

Optional Google Drive backup

If you choose to connect Google Drive, the app saves a backup file to the hidden app folder of your own Google Drive account (the drive.appdata permission). The app can only see the files it created there, not your other Drive files. BrewedLabs never receives your backups or your Google account data. You can disconnect at any time in Settings, and delete the backup from Google Drive (Settings → Manage apps → Wortfreund → Delete hidden app data).

Online services the app contacts

Some features send a short request to a third-party service. These requests contain only what is needed for the feature and no personal information:

Dictionary lookups (when a word is not in the offline dictionary and online lookup is on): the searched word is sent to kaikki.org (Wiktionary data).
Picture search: the search term (usually the English meaning of a word) is sent to Pixabay and Pexels; chosen pictures are downloaded and stored on your device.
Word packs: optional dictionary packs are downloaded from our public download page.
DeepL (only if you enter your own DeepL API key): the word to translate is sent to DeepL using your key.

These services may log technical data such as your IP address, as any website does, under their own privacy policies.

On-device features

Pronunciation uses your phone's built-in text-to-speech, and machine translation (when used) runs on your device via Google ML Kit. Photos you take or pick from your gallery stay on your device.

Permissions

Internet: for the online features above.
Notifications: for the optional daily reminder.
Camera / photos: only when you choose to add your own picture; uses the system picker.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect any personal data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new date.
